Darren Austin Hall is a musician, sound healer and a yoga teacher. He tours around the world in order to show people his unique way of combining music and healing. The first time sound healing popped up in his life was while he was dreaming about an alien. Deddou wanted to know more about this dream and how sound healing works, so she sat down with him to find out more.
Deddou: You call yourself a sound healer – what exactly do you do?
Darren: Another word for sound healing is vibrational meditation. We know that everything in the universe is energy. This moving energy makes a sound or a frequency. We can use practices and tools that use music to affect the deep energy of the body in very powerful ways. In western culture there are primarily diseases like psychological issues and stress related disorders. Sound healing can affect and release these diseases closer to the root.
Deddou: That’s a very specific method of healing. How did you get into sound healing?
Darren: Since I was a child I was drawn to the more mystical side of music. While I was studying Chinese Medicine I took a semester off and I visited an astrologer for the first time in my life. She told me to combine sound and healing. So I asked her: How can I do that? She just said: Google it! After this meeting I stayed up for hours just reading about it online and I discovered that it was a very ancient modality. I was literally opening up a door into a new, exciting world. Circumstances started to align and a few days later I happen to see a sound healer perform. It was life changing for me.
Deddou: What were your personal steps to becoming a sound healer?
Darren: I got myself a full chakra set of seven crystal bowls to play with. I actually had no idea how to use them in the beginning. I just started to practice and self-studied the techniques of different teachers. While playing I started to sing in a shamanic way, the language of light. I also use tuning forks in my sessions. They are instruments to change our inner tuning by creating a resonance throughout the mind, body and emotions. But sincerely, the first time I heard about tuning forks was years before, in a rather peculiar way. When I was researching about sound healing I stumbled upon the tuning forks and I immediately remembered a meaningful dream of mine, I had several years ago.
Deddou: Now I am curious. Please tell me more about this dream!
Darren: Six years before I started studying Chinese Medicine I used to live in China. One night I dreamed of a grey headed Alien with big black eyes. A handful of tuning forks were lying on the table between us. The alien picked one by one up and started to put each tuning fork in my energy field around my body. The energy field began to vibrate. I got worried and asked myself if I might have been manipulated by an outside force. Then this extraterrestrial being started to telepathically communicate with me. It said: We’re healing your DNA, don’t worry! So, I let go and began to experience my energy flowing. The crazy thing is that even 10 minutes after waking up I could still feel these vibrations throughout my body. After a while I forgot about this dream – until the day I started to research more about sound healing. But that was only six years later.
Deddou: It’s interesting how life talks to us in mystical ways! Is there any exercise you can recommend our readers to tune into their energy at home?
Darren: I recommend reading “The Power Of Now” by Eckhart Tolle, where you find simple meditations called “Inner Body Awareness Meditations.” It’s important for people to know that the body can be felt like an ocean of energy. To start you can sit in a chair with the spine straight or lie down. Try to scan your body from the toes to the top of the head and breathe in love and light. It can take some time, because a lot of people are energetically very insensitive. The energy will respond to thoughts of love, it will become more vibrant. The idea is just to be with that energy and to interact with it in a loving way; it is part of our being. Awareness will change the structure of yourself in order to heal. You can also use sound while meditating. Allow your body to inhale air and exhale long vocal sounds through the mouth. Follow the sound energy vibrating in different parts of the body and send it to a part that needs healing. Or think about a project in your life that might be challenging and use the power of sound to make those dreams come true.
